AP Environmental Science Exam

Course Overview
AP Environmental Science (APES) is an interdisciplinary course that combines concepts from biology, chemistry, geology, geography, and other scientific fields related to the environment. The goal is to help students understand the scientific principles, concepts, and methods used to analyze natural and human-made environmental problems. Students evaluate risks, explore potential solutions, and examine real-world issues through classroom learning, laboratory investigations, and fieldwork.

Exam Format
The AP Environmental Science Exam measures students’ understanding of environmental concepts and their ability to apply scientific reasoning, data analysis, and problem-solving skills.
Total Exam Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Calculator Use: A four-function (with square root), scientific, or graphing calculator is permitted on both sections.
Exam Administration: Beginning in 2025, the AP Environmental Science Exam is administered digitally through the Bluebook™ app.

Section I: Multiple Choice
Questions: 80
Time: 90 minutes
Weight: 60% of the total exam score

Questions assess students’ ability to analyze data, interpret graphs and models, and apply scientific principles to real-world environmental scenarios. Multiple-choice questions include both individual questions and question sets with data or reading passages.

Section II: Free Response
Questions: 3
Time: 70 minutes
Weight: 40% of the total exam score

The Free Response section includes three types of questions:
1. Design and Analyze an Investigation – Demonstrate understanding of experimental design and data interpretation.
2. Analyze an Environmental Problem and Propose a Solution – Evaluate causes, effects, and potential remedies for an environmental issue.
3. Analyze and Solve with Calculations – Apply quantitative reasoning to environmental data or scenarios.

When Is the AP Environmental Science Exam?
For the 2025–2026 school year, the AP Environmental Science Exam will be administered on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 8 a.m. local time.
