AP Chemistry Exam

The AP Chemistry course was revised beginning with the 2013-14 academic year. Topics covered include atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium. The revised curriculum is now built around 6 big ideas which encompass core scientific principles, theories, and processes. Laboratory investigations are also a major focus of the course with 25% of the class devoted to lab work, with a minimum of 16 hands-on labs.

The AP Chemistry Exam format is:

Section I:
60 Multiple-Choice Questions (90 minutes, 50% of final grade)

Section II:
7 Free-Response Questions (105 minutes, 50% of final grade)

There are 3 long-answer questions and 4 short-answer questions. The free-response skills assesses are:

  1. Experimental design
  2. Quantitative/qualitative translation
  3. Analysis of authentic lab data and observations to identify patterns or explain phenomena
  4. Creating or analyzing atomic and molecular views to explain observations
  5. Following a logical/analytical pathway to solve a problem

A periodic table of the elements is provided as well as a formula and constants chart. These may be used on the entire exam. A scientific calculator may be used for the free-response section only.

When is the AP Chemistry Exam?

The AP Chemistry Exam date for the 2022–2023 school year is Monday, May 1, 2023 at 12 noon. The test is only offered once per year.
