AP Chemistry Practice Exams

Albert.io Chemistry. Hundreds of high quality AP Chem questions organized around the 6 big ideas from the updated curriculum. Most of their content is free, but you need to subscribe for full access.

Barron’s Test. Barron’s has published a free online AP Chemistry practice exam. Includes multiple choice along with free response questions. This is a full-length test with some great questions.

Science Geek Interactive Review Activities. This is a huge collection of practice quizzes including chapter review questions and many tests on many specific topics. This is an amazing resource, and it has been updated for the new test.

Adrian Dingles Chemistry Pages. Tons of AP chemistry multiple choice quizzes, organized by topic. Interactive tests with answers and explanations.

Sample Multiple Choice. The AP Chemistry Course Description packet has 26 practice questions starting on page 117.

1994 Released Exam and 1999 Released Exam. These are the actual AP Chemistry tests from 1994 and 1999 that have been released by the College Board. Not as useful now that the test has been revised.

Zumdahl Chemistry Textbook. This is the student companion site for the 8th edition of the popular Chemistry text by Zumdahl. Great interactive quizzes for each chapter. Just select the chapter/topic and click on Tutorial Quiz.

Textbook Tests. The student site for the 9th edition of Chemistry: The Central Science by Brown. Choose your topic from the list of chapters and then click on “Problem Solving Center” to get to the quiz questions.

AP Chemistry Free Response

Questions from 2014 and 2016. Here are all the actual AP Chemistry free response questions from the most recent exams. For more sample free response questions based on the revised exam check out page 136 of the AP Chem Course Description.

NMSI Notes. This awesome set of AP Chem notes is from the National Math & Science Initiative. Notes are organized by topic, and instructional videos are here as well.

Stephen Akiki’s Notes. A complete set of AP Chemistry notes. This 45 page PDF covers the entire course. Very thorough and detailed notes!

PowerPoint Notes. Nice collection of PowerPoint AP Chemistry notes from ScienceGeek.

Chapter Notes. These are the chapter notes for Chemistry: The Central Science. Click on “Study Guide” for each chapter to access these detailed notes.

AP Chemistry Study Tools

Bozeman Science Videos. Excellent website with 71 AP Chemistry videos. These are all organized according to the 6 Big Ideas that are covered in the course. A great way to review the most important concepts!

Chemmybear Study Cards. An excellent set of study cards that can be printed out on either side of heavy-weight paper. Great information on all topics.

Exam Review Videos. The first of 3 exam review videos by Robert Ayton.

Quick Hitters Exam Video. This two hour video covers a lot of important exam material. Follow along with the review guide.

Highest-Rated AP Chem Study Guides from Amazon

AP Chemistry Crash Course Book + Online. The Crash Course book is completely revised for the 2014 exam. This is a very concise AP Chemistry study guide that focuses on the 6 big ideas which are covered on the revised exam. Also includes a access to a complete online practice test.

Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam, 2017 Edition. This is another good option for a study guide that is fully updated for the new 2014 exam format. Includes a detailed review of key concepts, testing strategies, and 2 full-length practice exams that are based on the new curriculum. This book is getting great reviews!

About the Exam

The AP Chemistry course was revised beginning with the 2013-14 academic year. Topics covered include atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, and equilibrium. The revised curriculum is now built around 6 big ideas which encompass cores scientific principles, theories, and processes. Laboratory investigations are also a major focus of the course with 25% of the class devoted to lab work, with a minimum of 16 hands-on labs.

The AP Chemistry Exam format is:

Section I: Multiple-Choice Questions (90 minutes, 50% of final grade)
-60 multiple choice questions

Section II: Seven Free-Response Questions (105 minutes, 50% of final grade)
-3 long-answer questions
-4 short-answer questions

Free-Response Skills Assessed:

  1. Experimental design
  2. Quantitative/qualitative translation
  3. Analysis of authentic lab data and observations to identify patterns or explain phenomena
  4. Creating or analyzing atomic and molecular views to explain observations
  5. Following a logical/analytical pathway to solve a problem

A periodic table of the elements is provided as well as a formula and constants chart. These may be used on the entire exam. A scientific calculator may be used for the free-response section only.

When is the AP Chemistry Exam?

The AP Chemistry Exam date for the 2016/2017 school year is Monday, May 1st 2017 at 8 a.m. The test is only offered once per year.
